Everyone loves a Les Paul Standard – just check out Madge over there on the right. (We could have gone with someone like Joe Bonamassa, or countless other high profile Les Paul players, but couldn’t resist this one. And believe it or not, that’s a spot of Pantera she’s cutting loose on!)
Tools of the trade
You’ll find a Les Paul Standard, (and/or maybe a Les Paul Custom), in probably just about every big name guitarist’s stage rack. And if you removed all the Les Pauls from the world’s recording studios, the buildings would likely fall down. Since getting the formula exactly right in the late fifties, the Les Paul has become one of the essential “tools of the trade” for the working musician, featuring on so many hit recordings that by now it’s literally impossible to count.
PAF humbuckers
The unmistakable Les Paul tone sits there alongside the Telecaster and Stratocaster as part of the fabric of modern music, and this killer Standard nails the classic LP sound perfectly. A 2005 model, the guitar features an awesome set of Gibson’s reissue PAF humbuckers, (see pic # 7), in this case the famous Burstbucker Pro’s.
A little extra bite
Burstbucker Pro’s are all fitted as a factory calibrated set, wax potted, and with the bridge wound slightly hotter for a little extra bite in your lead work. The Alnico V magnets in the Burstbucker Pro give a fatter, ballsier tone, with more drive and attack, meaning you can both solo and power chord to your heart’s content.
The great Les Paul tone
Showing all the signs of playwear we like to see in a truly great working guitar, this LP Standard has been played extensively – pics 4, 5 and 6 clearly show she’s earnt her keep. So, not immaculate, but man, what a player! Something worth noting is the weight. In the classic trade-off of weight and tone, this one has all the great Les Paul tone in the world, but she weighs in at 10lb 4oz / 4.65kg, so this is not a light guitar by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, as a 2005 model, this is one of the last fully solidbody Standards, before Gibson switched over to their “weight relieved” bodies. You want the real deal? This is it!
